The department is dedicated to fostering holistic development and nurturing future leaders in the field of Development Studies by offering a comprehensive curriculum that evolves with the changing development landscape. Starting with the Undergraduate Course B.A. PPD (Public Policy and Development), the department expanded the offerings to include B.A. (Gen) with a diverse range of 9 subjects, B.A. PPD (Hons.), Masters in Geography, Psychology, Political Science, International Relations, or English Literature, and a robust Ph.D. Program. The courses cover a spectrum of topics, including economic development, social justice, environmental sustainability, and global governance. Through real-world projects, internships, and fieldwork, students apply classroom knowledge to address real-world challenges.
The department's objective is to conduct research advancing the understanding of complex economic, social, and political processes of change in impoverished regions. The programs are designed to educate people, representatives, and development practitioners at grassroots levels, fostering a multidisciplinary perspective. Thrust areas of research include participatory development, gender issues, housing, drinking water and education, civil society and panchayat raj, rural development management, and agriculture and market, among others. Additionally, the department sponsors and coordinates research on various developmental issues with policy implications at both regional and national levels.
The department encourages unrestricted academic imagination and focuses on studying government decisions and actions related to socioeconomic development and public concerns. The course curriculum helps to understand citizen problems, economies, environments, and national and international issues leading to development. We provide practical knowledge for sustainable development and policy drafting beneficial to people. Through opportunities for critical examination of relevant knowledge and diversity embraced through fieldwork and internships, we strive to create fair and inclusive educational spaces. In essence, our department is dedicated to developing a new class of professionals capable of designing and managing public policy to address India's developmental challenges.
