The department is dedicated to fostering holistic development and nurturing future leaders in the field of Development Studies by offering a comprehensive curriculum that evolves with the changing development landscape. Beginning with the undergraduate course B.A. PPD (Public Policy and Development), the department has expanded its offerings to include B.A. programs with a diverse range of nine subjects, B.A. PPD (Hons.), and master’s programs in Geography, Psychology, Political Science, International Relations, and English Literature, as well as a robust Ph.D. program. These courses cover a spectrum of topics, including economic development, social justice, environmental sustainability, and global governance. Through real-world projects, internships, and fieldwork, students apply classroom knowledge to address real-world challenges.
The department's objective is to advance the understanding of complex economic, social, and political processes of change in impoverished regions through impactful research. The programs are designed to educate individuals, representatives, and development practitioners at grassroots levels, fostering a multidisciplinary perspective. The thrust areas of research include participatory development, human studies, gender issues, human psychology, housing, drinking water and education, civil society and Panchayati Raj, rural development management, and agriculture and markets, among others. Additionally, the department sponsors and coordinates research on various developmental issues with policy implications at both regional and national levels.
The department encourages unrestricted academic imagination and emphasizes studying government decisions and actions related to socioeconomic development and public concerns. The curriculum equips students with the tools to understand citizen problems, economies, environments, and national and international issues, all contributing to sustainable development. Practical knowledge for sustainable development and policy drafting beneficial to people is a core focus. By providing opportunities for critical examination of relevant knowledge and embracing diversity through fieldwork and internships, the department strives to create fair and inclusive educational spaces.
